The newly established Chair of Multilingual Computational Linguistics at the University of Passau has been held by Professor Johann-Mattis List since its inception on 1 January 2023. One of the chair’s concrete goals for the next five years is to expand Cross-Linguistic Data Formats ( https://cldf.clld.org ) to promote the curation, standardisation and publication of cross-linguistic digital data.
As part of this initiative, the following position is available at the chair starting 1 April 2023 :
Assistant Professor (Akademischer Rat/Akademische Rätin auf Zeit)
Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant
(Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter/Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin)
This is a three-year fixed-term contract with the possibility of extension by an additional three years following a positive evaluation.
Requirements for employment as an Assistant Professor:
You have completed your doctoral thesis in the field of computer science, computational linguistics or general/comparative linguistics and have extensive knowledge of scientific and web-based programming with Python. Applicants who fulfil the eligibility requirements for a German Beamter (civil service) career can be hired as a temporary Akademischer Rat/Akademische Rätin and would then be remunerated at pay grade A13 of the German public-sector pay scale for civil servants. While employed by the chair, the candidate will have the opportunity to write their postdoctoral habilitation thesis.
Requirements for employment as a Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant:
You have a university master’s degree in computer science or computational linguistics and excellent programming skills, specifically in Python, as well as experience in the development of open source software projects and in web administration with Linux. This GTRA position would be remunerated at pay grade E13 of the German public-sector collective agreement (TV-L E13). While employed by the chair, you will be given the opportunity to study towards your doctorate.
Teach courses in the field of multilingual computational linguistics to the extent of five hours per week during the semester; these courses can be directed at students or university staff.
Conduct research on topics related to the standardisation of cross-linguistic data.
Collaborate on the expansion of the programming projects of the chair, especially in the development of Cross-Linguistic Data Formats and the deployment of linguistic data with the help of the CLLD framework ( https://clld.org ).
Assist and advise colleagues at the chair and other involved chairs on programming issues (organising workshops, training student assistants).
Willingness to advise students and staff from the University of Passau as well as collaborating institutions on programming issues and to hold courses for students and staff.
Excellent programming skills, particularly in Python, and a willingness to familiarise yourself with the specific software being developed at our chair.
Very good spoken and written English and German language skills.
