At the chair of «Fire Dynamics» we are an interdisciplinary and international team and are looking for support for our research work in the field of fire simulation. In numerical fire simulations, design fires are often used to determine the impact of the fire to the surrounding objects. However, this fire curve is predefined and does not allow to account for local conditions such as ventilation, heat interaction or material properties during fire propagation. For this detailed pyrolysis models need to be combined with combustion models and detailed flow calculations. These calculations, and even the derivation of the required material parameters, are associated with a high computational and time expenditure along with high uncertainty, so that in projects, e.g. vehicle projects in the railway industry, correspondingly high costs (and energy consumption) can arise throughout the entire development phase. Within the framework of the BMBF-funded BESKID project, AI approaches, i.e. methods based on artificial intelligence, are being investigated in order to reduce these immense computing times. The research into AI methods for determining the material parameters for pyrolysis modelling is supervised in the research project by the chair of „Computational Civil Engineering“. AI methods for the reduction of the entire CFD calculation for the extreme fast fire spread calculation will be researched on the basis of Kl-based reduced order models at the chair for „Fire Dynamics“ within the framework of the project. There will thus be a close exchange between the two chairs. In addition, there is close cooperation with industrial partners from railway industry and the Jülich Research Centre, where primarily the validation experiments take place.
Professional and personal requirements:
Completed university studies (Master’s degree or comparable) in (chemical/physical) engineering, physics or applied mathematics
Expertise in the design and implementation of scientific simulation models and machine learning
Extensive experience in the field of reduced order modelling is desirable
Very good knowledge of programming with Python or C++
Good experience with open-source based flow calculations (e. g. OpenFOAM)
Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and international team
Strong interest in complex issues and basic research
Social and communicative competence
Good knowledge of German and very good knowledge of English (written and spoken)

Responsibilities and duties:
Development and use of Kl-based computer models in fire dynamics with the focus on reduced order modelling
Evaluation of experimental data for model validation
Cooperation in national and international cooperations
Presentation of results at meetings and conferences
Preparation of interim and final reports
